Right here at the park
Before you even head out, there is enough on site to fill an afternoon, which is a lifesaver on a travel day. We have a children’s playground and a jumping pillow, loads of grassed space for the kids to run around, and a camp kitchen and BBQ areas for easy family meals. It is a low-stress way to let everyone burn off some energy while you put your feet up for five minutes. You will find the full list on our facilities page.
Esperance foreshore and Adventureland Park
About a five minute drive from us, the redeveloped foreshore is the town’s main family hub, and it is lovely. Adventureland Park is a big playground right on the water, there is a skate park next door for older kids on boards, scooters and BMX, and a paved path runs along the coast that is easy going with prams or bikes. The town beach has a sheltered swimming area too, so it is a safe spot for a paddle.
Esperance Museum
A great one to keep up your sleeve for a rainy day, and it is cheap as chips. The Esperance Museum covers local history and, best of all for the kids, holds actual pieces of Skylab, the NASA space station that broke up over the Esperance area when it fell to Earth in 1979. The hands-on displays tend to go down a treat. About a five minute drive from the park.
Pink Lake Lookout
Quick heads up: the lake is not pink anymore (you can read the full story of why pink lake isn’t pink anymore here), so it is worth setting expectations before you pile everyone into the car. It is still a nice, quiet stop with a wide salt lake and it makes a surprisingly good science lesson for the kids about why the colour disappeared. Just a few minutes from drive from our park.
Cape Le Grand National Park and Lucky Bay
A little further out, around 45 minutes to an hour by car, but so worth it. Lucky Bay is famous for the kangaroos that laze about on the sand, and the swimming is calm and shallow, which is ideal for families. The sand is so firm you can drive a 2WD onto the entrance of the beach, though plenty of people just park and walk. For the best chance of spotting the kangaroos, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it is quieter. National park entry fees apply, and do note that dogs are not allowed in the park.
Esperance Stonehenge
A full-size replica of Stonehenge built from local Esperance pink granite, about 20 minutes from the park. It is a fun, slightly unexpected stop for a wander and some photos the kids will actually want to be in. An entry fee applies. Check opening hours before you go.
Lucky Bay Brewing
A relaxed, family and dog friendly spot where the kids have room to move outside while the grown-ups try a local beer. There is a food menu with something for everyone, and it makes an easy early dinner after a big day out. Around ten minutes from the park.
Beach fishing with the kids
Fishing is a cheap, easy activity that most kids love, and happily you do not need a licence to fish from the shore or a jetty in WA. The new Esperance Jetty in town has low platforms and built-in seats that are perfect for beginners, and Bandy Creek Boat Harbour is calm and sheltered.
